Bridge the differences and build connections

Inuit are at or near the bottom of all indicators of core socio-economic well-being. The oppression has led Inuit people to lose contact with their culture and identity. But, despite the hardship and adversity in power, with a failing of the justice system, the importance of the family in the social, economic and political of the people highlights their ability to work TOGETHER to find relevant solutions for themselves. Such approaches, mobilizing all resources, provide steps that redefine culturally appropriate processes for the people.

It is quite interesting to see that one possible solution is to return to the traditional customary adoption whose main objective was the welfare of the child and which formerly was practiced according to a set of very specific rules and clearly defined circumstances.

Housing needs are important in communities

Modern Inuit life has led them to live in a real ghetto. They, therefore, have difficulty to cope. Sixty years ago, they were sharing space in nomadic communities of 50 persons. Despite investments of the Government of Quebec, housing needs are important in communities. At six or seven social housing projects per year, it is difficult to see the end of the difficult living conditions they bear. In Nunavik, these needs are estimated at 1030 units and 52% of the families are estimated to live in a context of overcrowding. They are struggling to come to terms with modern life.

Although Nunavik and its population do not lack their own characteristics and traditions from Kuujjuarapik to Ivujivik, it is almost impossible to identify common features of landscapes and populations whose numbers range from 180 to 2375 people.

The essential conditions for awareness of failing them in their rights

More than any other population of a territory, Nunavik, and its population seldom complain. They are mostly compliant.  Public awareness must be done now. It is possible that its impact will only intensify as other indigenous peoples demand respect and enjoyment of the same rights as all Canadians. The essential conditions for this awareness rely on mutual collaboration, listening to the real needs and interests of their populations and meeting with them for suitable planning. Could they not freely choose their model of society without being forced to adopt a model proposed by those who believe they are dominant?

We can all do something to move towards the common concerns

In the philosophy of the proponents of solidarity, there are no irreversible situations: neither that of women nor that of the children and their communities. However, we will never be too many or too different to reduce social inequalities. Each of us can do something to move towards the common concerns of all of our society. When a strong collective consciousness will manifest in favor of equality, solidarity and sustainable development "without winners or losers," we no longer speak of helplessness.

Petition to empower the mothers and to reduce placements of the children

Like all that matters, we have to make the connections with what we can all do to help. This petition to be given to PM Justin Trudeau hopes to restore dignity but also their rights to a stable family and harmonious community.

No Child Should Take the Long Way Home

Children, mothers, and communities are the object of this project No Child Should Take the Long Way Home. After all, every child is born with the right to have a better chance at a life free from abuse and violence.

But the children are very vulnerable when they are removed from their birth families. When they are removed not only from their families but from their community, children lose out on being raised by their own families, in their own communities. As a result, there are increased numbers of Inuit children in child and foster care.

No Child Should Take the Long Way Home is a grassroot initiative to help children in need of loving care, of a protective and stable environment to meet their basic needs for protection, shelter, and education in a safe house in their own community.
